As a follow up to my initial posts about diet and nutrition, I have decided to dedicate the remainder of January to fine tuning my diet. Being in the base period of training, I feel nutrition will be instrumental in order to stay on track and injury free for IM Louisville.
My knowledge is fairly limited and I am not all that interested in researching much further on this topic, I have my general guidelines which I will follow:
1) No high Glycemic foods prior to bed time
2) Keep % relatively close (proteins, carbs, and fats)
3) Frozen Veggies save the day
4) Canned Pears and Peaches are my life
5) Balance and moderation, meaning limit alcohol
6) Replenish energy stores, moderate to high Glycemic foods within 30 min of working out
7) Fat is our friends- fish, nuts, avocado, etc…
Maybe I do have strong enough guidelines to make it the distance? Or maybe this is just a case of I do not know, what I do n0t know. Either way, I think it would be smart to enlist the help of a professional to confirm my consumption decisions or help make some changes. I have started to research nutritionist in the NYC area to schedule initial consultations. First I did a general Google search and came up with too many all natural, organic, crazed berry pickers. Which I thought was a good start, but not someone who may understand the rigors of a season preparing for an Ironman. And since I also do not know what I am in store for, two none informed people is not a recipe for success.
I needed to further refine my search to find someone familiar with the rigors of training for an Ironman and understand a need for a base caloric intake and the timing of foods. I was able to find a few sports nutrition specific sites which offered guidance from registered nutrionists. I have scheduled for consultations with two of them and hope to gain a better understanding of what I need to change about my current diet.
Who knows? Maybe I could convince my nutrionist to come on for an interview. That would be fun and informative. It could bring some more readers to my site and some that will hopefully post comments…
